AI Overviews vs AI Mode: two surfaces, one merge on the horizon

AI Overviews is the AI summary Google injects above the blue links on informational queries; AI Mode is a separate conversational tab with no blue links that runs query fan-out. They cite differently enough that a brand can win one and lose the other, and Google announced on 19 May 2026 that they will merge.

AI Overviews vs AI Mode: two surfaces, one merge on the horizon

Intent is the real difference

AI Overviews is unrequested. Google decides to show it, on roughly 47% of general informational searches and up to 84% of health queries. AI Mode is a deliberate click, with queries about three times longer than classic search.

Fan-out changes who gets cited

AI Mode decomposes a question into up to sixteen parallel searches before answering. That means sources which never rank for the literal query can end up cited, and pages optimised purely for the head term can vanish.

What to do about the merge

  1. Don't build your schema around a permanent distinction between the two.
  2. Don't let a pitch rest on surface count — coverage breadth is a weaker moat than data quality.
  3. Keep historical series per surface so you can splice them cleanly when the merge lands.
