The twelve AI answer surfaces that matter, and how they differ
Twelve surfaces matter for AI visibility: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, the Gemini app, the Chinese ecosystem (DeepSeek, Qwen, Doubao, Kimi, Baidu ERNIE) and Naver in Korea. They are not variations of one thing — each has a distinct access model, citation structure and failure mode.

They are not variations of one thing
The most common mistake in AI visibility reporting is treating surfaces as interchangeable channels of the same phenomenon. A brand can win AI Overviews and lose AI Mode on the same query, because AI Mode runs query fan-out and decomposes one question into as many as sixteen parallel searches before synthesising.
Volume is not evenly distributed
- Google AI Overviews: roughly 2.5 billion monthly users on Google's own I/O 2026 figure — an order of magnitude above ChatGPT.
- Google AI Mode: around 1 billion monthly users within twelve months.
- ChatGPT: around 900 million weekly users.
- Gemini app: around 900 million users, but behind a login.
- Perplexity and Copilot: small by comparison, and asked for anyway.
Access is what makes them expensive
AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot all work logged-out. The blocker there is Cloudflare and fingerprinting, not authentication. Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen and Doubao need accounts, which changes both the cost structure and the methodology.
