AI Overviews
AI Overviews is the AI-generated summary Google places above the classic search results on informational queries, with three to five citation chips. It appears without the user asking for it, on roughly 47% of general informational searches.
Launched broadly in the US in May 2024 and now running in 200+ countries and 40+ languages. Google put the surface at about 2.5 billion monthly users at I/O in May 2026; the figure is Google's own and is not independently verified.
Google announced on 19 May 2026 that AI Overviews and AI Mode will merge into a single AI Search experience; no completion date has been published.
