Surface

In AI visibility, a surface is a specific user-facing interface that produces AI answers — AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Doubao and so on. Surfaces backed by the same model can produce materially different citations.

Measuring by model rather than by surface hides the differences that matter, because retrieval, ranking, ads and commerce modules live at the surface layer, not the model layer.
