Answer box
An answer box is any SERP element that answers the query directly on the results page — featured snippets historically, AI Overviews now.
Featured snippets pulled one passage from one page. AI Overviews synthesise several sources, so optimisation shifts from owning a passage to being one of the sources worth synthesising.
Both compress clicks, which is why impression-versus-click divergence is now a standard AEO diagnostic.
